Brought together on a whim,

Organized by chance,

Yet worshiped as if god.

MUSIC TURNED OFF July 5, 2011

Music turned off angrily, sameness beating my drums.

Heard before, heard too often, nothing now excites.

Silence for a day or two.  Silence as God intends.

How else will I know what the universe demands

Unless I take time to listen, listen in.

CANNING June 26, 2011

Placed in a Ball canning jar

Sealed, steamed, catalogued, and saved.

Labored for hours over the label,

Unsure what to call the preserved past.

WALL CLOCK June 26, 2011

The clock on the wall,

The time,

In my dream,

Coincided with reality.

There were other dials,

Other activities,

Other people,

Other things to see.

But only time

Remained

The moment

Awareness came.

Rummaging through the past and dust falls

Into my eyes.

Blinded, I cannot see.

STEP OUTSIDE June 26, 2011

Perhaps the Cosmonauts were trying to be funny

Circling the earth, floating through outer space.

Where is god? they asked.  We do not see a god.

And spontaneously across America the answer rose,

Step outside your capsule, then you’ll see god.

Outside. God is there waiting for you.

Oh how we laughed at the cleverness of our thoughts and

righteously felt having put the non believers in their place

and no doubt envisioned the scowl on their faces as they

heard our undeniable response –

yet the one Cosmonaut smiled,

understanding the eternal and the infinite,

And hesitated at the door.

OUTERMOST EDGE June 26, 2011

And there are those millions of places

Farthest from the center of the universe

Spinning at the outermost edge.

Perhaps in their night sky is a place of

Wondrous light and a place of solid black.

Or there is a single star,

All the light of the universe,

A distant mystery.

RIPPLES AND ROOTS June 20, 2011

There are loose ends around the earth,

flapping as the world spins.

There are explosive ripples,

water under the earth,

turning up buildings and soil,

forcing balance to run away.

There is a wind that echoes the day,

howls the nights,

plugging ears with dread,

forcing silence in places it never should be.

There is one tree, the largest in the universe,

waiting for rain to touch each leaf.

But until that day comes,

it looks down at all that is happening

and wonders if roots are such a good thing.

Flowers, mechanical devices, and she

Stands still, unable to choose. Unable

To step forward under the hot iron

Stares and be branded forever as a

Lover of the natural, or of the made.

Struck by the nothingness of the fog,

Its ability to lift me back to a dream

Of yesterday when you stood, silent,

Next to me, gazing up at the breaking

Clouds, the remnants of a new moon,

And a future that always seemed to be.
